Berkeley Lab is committed to maintain both excellence and an integrity in our research by promoting and supporting the ethical and responsible conduct of research across all disciplines. As part of our commitment we offer participation in the CITI Program, a service that provides research ethics education to members of the research community.

Collaborative Institutional Training Initiative (CITI)

The CITI program offers internationally recognized courses that fulfills NSF/NIH RCR requirements, with multiple courses covering a variety of areas. Researchers at Berkeley Lab should choose either the Bio-medical track (B-M), or the Social-behavioral-educational (SBE) track depending on their research focus. Both tracks offer multiple modules which can be taken all at one (a one to two hour commitment) or taken one at a time. CITI will allow you to pause in the middle of a module and come back to it. To enter CITI , register with your email and a password. For institution you should select “Other DOE”. It is important not to select Lawrence Berkeley Lab if you see that on the list, as this connection is moribund. Select the course you want and begin. When you have completed the course, downloadable pdf of your completion certificate for your records.

Training in the Responsible Use of Human Subjects

The Berkeley Lab human subjects protection program currently requires ethical training for all researchers and all personnel working in human subject research (including contractors and staff). All protocol personnel are required to take the CITI ethics training course in the appropriate research focus. This must be renewed with a refresher course every three years. This video series will introduce key topics and ethical dilemmas in the responsible conduct of research. We hope it will prompt the exchange of information and discussion about research integrity principles among undergraduate/graduate students, post-doctoral fellows, scientists, and administrators.

“The Lab: Avoiding Research Misconduct” An Interactive Movie (Watch the Movie)

In “The Lab: Avoiding Research Misconduct,” you become the lead characters in an interactive movie and make decisions about integrity in research that can have long-term consequences. The simulation addresses Responsible Conduct of Research topics such as avoiding research misconduct, mentorship responsibilities, handling of data, responsible authorship, and questionable research practices. You assume the role of four characters (PI, postdoctoral researcher, third-year graduate student, or research administrator) confronted with the pressures of working in a research laboratory.
